Journal #3- This week I went to Tuesday Night Trivia! I’ve always been a huge fan of trivia, so this was an activity I knew that I needed to try out. The trivia event was held in the commons, but there was a much bigger turnout of people than what I expected, meaning there were barely enough chairs. But somehow my friends and I were able to get a table. I liked how there was a variety of trivia, from movie scenes, short clips of music, and then also a category of random knowledge questions. While I enjoyed the idea behind the event, I thought that many of the questions were either way too simple or that the genre of the trivia was too repetitive. Even though I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I could, I am still looking forward to going to more in the future, and am hopeful that the trivia topics will switch up every now and then. Overall, while the trivia itself wasn’t my favorite, I ended up having fun just by spending time with my friends. This activity also gave me something different to do outside of my dorm, which I liked because it meant that I was able to go a little outside of my comfort zone by trying something new.

Journal #6- On Wednesday I went to my first Outing Club meeting! This was the first official club meeting I’ve been to this semester, and overall, I would say that it went pretty well. There were A LOT of people there. I was a little embarrassed that I showed up a few minutes late, but there were still more people coming in during the meeting, so I got over it very quickly. First, we started with outing club bingo, an activity used to get to know other people in the club, old or new. Afterwards, the club officers presented the meeting slideshow, which covered some of the ways we as members could get involved and the various hikes and trips that were going on in future months. I was really interested in a lot of the activities being shown, but also felt very under experienced compared to the people around me. I’ve only ever hiked a few times, so I would not consider myself an expert by any means, and never before this meeting have I seriously considered trying activities like rock climbing in real life. But now, even though I am still somewhat hesitant, I still want to be more open in having new experiences and overcoming my fears – Two things that I believe this particular club will be good at helping me with.

Journal #9- On Monday, I went to the first meeting for The Giving Tree Club held in Featherman 120. I heard that it was a volunteering club at the Involvement fair, and because this was something I was involved in and really enjoyed at my high school, I was really interested in checking it out. When I walked in, there were a lot more people than I expected. Even the president of the club was surprised at how big a turnout we had for our first meeting. We started by just going over what the club was and the main mission of giving back to our community. In the slide show, the executive board members introduced themselves with a funny picture and then explained what their role was in the club. After that, the president of the club shared a few upcoming volunteering opportunities that we had a chance to get involved in, such as Meals For Maine, the Campus Blood Drive, and helping out in the local Food Pantry. After the presentation, we all stood in a circle and did an ice breaker by passing around a beach ball that had questions on it about what our major was, our favorite movies/TV shows, and why we decided on going to UNE. Overall, it was a very fun and engaging first meeting. Everyone there seemed to get along very well, and I am really looking forward to the next meeting and trying to get involved in the club more this semester.

Week 5- This week, I went to another Tuesday Trivia night at the Commons first floor. I wasn’t planning on going, but I was in the Pub ordering a lemonade at around 8 when I heard something going on in the other room. I went to look, and I saw one of my friends sitting at a table with two other girls. When she saw me, she invited me over to join their group in trivia. It ended up being a lot of fun, and even though we didn’t necessarily get a lot of the questions right, we all still had a really great time talking with each other and laughing over how random some of the topics were. We ended up finishing after four or so rounds in 3rd place, which was kind of surprising, but it also makes  sense considering there weren’t many people there to begin with. Overall, I had a really fun time talking and meeting a few new people. I definitely plan on and look forward to going with the same group again for trivia next Tuesday night!

Week 10- This week, on Wednesday, I went to a Pre-PA club meeting to watch a presentation. These meetings are held every other Wednesday in ACHS at 7PM, and because I am a Medical Biology major with the hopes of one day becoming a PA, I am very excited to be a member of this club and I try to attend it as often as I can. For this week’s meeting, we were told to expect the pre-health academic advisor to give us a presentation on the pathway to becoming a Physician’s Assistant, but unfortunately, she was sick and unable to make it. But thankfully, our club leaders were able to find someone else to fill in for the presentation. The meeting ended up being almost an hour, one of the longest meetings we have had all semester by far, but a lot of interesting things were discussed! She talked to us about how, in applying for PA school, the board will look not only at your GPA and academics, but also, just as importantly, your engagement in community service, and overall qualities as a person. She also highlighted that a vast majority of PA schools require shadowing and around 500 hours of direct patient care to be remotely considered for acceptance into a program. While I did feel slightly intimidated by the future stress that this process will undoubtedly bring, I was still very excited to hear about all of the opportunities and possibilities I will be able to work towards. Overall, I am very happy I joined the Pre-PA club and that I have already been able to form connections with other people on campus who share the same ambition and enthusiasm as I do regarding this career.
